In a clever twist, Alzheimer's Research UK has crafted a brainteaser that challenges you to spot 40 railway stations hidden in a cryptic picture. But here's the catch: it's not just about beating the quiz master, Darragh Ennis from The Chase. It's about keeping your mind sharp and potentially reducing the risk of dementia.
Ennis, whose father passed away from dementia in 2024, is a passionate advocate for brain health. He emphasizes the importance of mental exercise, stating, 'The brain is something you have to exercise or else it gets lazy.' He's only found 32 stations so far, leaving eight to be discovered.
The puzzle is supported by Great Western Railway (GWR), which is promoting it at stations like Oxford, Didcot, Newbury, and Maidenhead. Ennis believes that daily brainteasers, like crosswords, can make a difference, even if they don't guarantee prevention. He says, 'Doing a crossword a day is not going to prevent you from getting dementia, but it changes the odds a little.'
A study by Alzheimer's Research UK revealed that only one in three adults in the south of England engage in daily puzzles or challenges. Many opt for passive activities like phone scrolling. However, Samantha Benham-Hermetz, an executive director at the charity, highlights the benefits of active brain engagement. She notes, 'One of the things I've noticed with the puzzle is that it challenges your brain to do things you wouldn't normally do or in different ways.'
