Guardiola's Title Race Reaction: Man City's Pep on Arsenal, Spurs Draw & Solanke Goal (2026)

In a bold statement that captures the essence of the ongoing title race, Pep Guardiola has dismissed any notion that Manchester City is resigned to losing ground to Arsenal FC, even as they find themselves six points adrift.

City initially appeared poised to maintain their momentum in the Premier League after securing a comfortable 2-0 lead against Tottenham Hotspur at their stadium. However, a determined comeback from Spurs resulted in City dropping crucial points in what has become a challenging title pursuit this Sunday afternoon.

Despite only managing to secure one victory in their last six league matches, Guardiola remains optimistic about his team's chances in the closing stages of the season. In his remarks following the 2-2 draw with Tottenham, he emphasized that with 14 games still remaining, there's ample opportunity to challenge Arsenal for the top spot.

"Although this setback is disappointing, we are still very much in the race," Guardiola shared with BBC Sport. "With 14 matches left, there are still plenty of points up for grabs."

He continued, expressing confidence: "When you have 14 games to play, hope persists, and we will always hold onto that hope."

Guardiola acknowledged the difficulty of some past matches where City needed to capitalize on their opportunities but expressed a positive outlook as key players return to fitness. "I witnessed an incredibly resilient spirit among the squad and many encouraging signs."

Reflecting on the unpredictable nature of Premier League matches, he noted, "In football, conceding a goal can shift the tide, especially when it's out of your control. This experience will serve as a lesson, ultimately making us stronger and better players moving forward."

The match also sparked controversy regarding Solanke's first goal, which raised questions about a possible foul on Marc Guehi during the buildup. When asked for his thoughts on the decision, Guardiola remarked that if the situation had been reversed—where a defender had tripped a striker—the referee would most likely have awarded a penalty.

He stated, "If a central defender were to catch a striker's trailing leg, it would certainly be deemed a penalty. After that, Tottenham controlled the game for a significant period, especially when they started winning second balls and changing the dynamic, gaining momentum post-goal. But we kept pushing forward."

So, with the title race heating up, do you think Manchester City can close the gap on Arsenal? Or is this just wishful thinking? We’d love to hear your opinions in the comments!
