Bold opening: Tap-to-pay is rolling out across Puget Sound, and it could change how you ride transit every day.
ORCA is launching a new tap-to-pay feature starting Monday, enabling riders to pay fares with contactless credit and debit cards or digital wallets across the Puget Sound region. You can use Visa, Mastercard, Discover Network, or American Express cards that support contactless payments, or digital wallets like Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay at ORCA readers. Payments can be made by simply tapping a card with the contactless symbol or by presenting the digital version of the card on a smartphone or other smart device.
This rollout aligns with global expectations for convenient, seamless payments and is timely as Seattle and the wider region gear up for major events in 2026, including the FIFA World Cup, which is anticipated to draw many international visitors.
Regional leaders describe Tap to Pay as a major milestone for King County transit. King County Executive Girmay Zahilay notes that it modernizes the system and makes everyday trips more convenient while broadening the appeal of transit—especially as the world comes to our region this summer. Sound Transit CEO Dow Constantine adds that adding Tap to Pay boosts rider convenience and helps occasional riders get on board.
While ORCA cards will still be issued and accepted on buses, trains, and ferries, the following services will not support tap-to-pay via ORCA at this time: Seattle Monorail, Washington State Ferries, King County Metro DART, Community Vans and Metro Flex, Community Transit, DART, and Zip Shuttle, Pierce Transit SHUTTLE, Pierce Transit Runner, and Everett Transit Paratransit.
Additionally, contactless payment options will soon be available on Kitsap Transit Fast Ferries, Foot Ferries, and the King County Water Taxi.
