Whale Sharks: The Ocean's Gentle Giants on the Move
In a remarkable discovery, researchers have witnessed a whale shark embark on an extraordinary journey, swimming an astonishing 1,200 kilometers from Madagascar to the Seychelles. This groundbreaking event not only highlights the species' ability to traverse vast distances but also emphasizes the critical need for international cooperation in protecting these endangered creatures.
The whale shark, the largest fish in the ocean, can grow up to 20 meters long and weigh an incredible 20 tonnes. Despite their immense size, they are gentle giants, filtering plankton, krill, and small fish from the water with their enormous mouths. However, these majestic creatures are facing numerous threats, including climate change, pollution, ship collisions, accidental bycatch, and deliberate hunting. As a result, the whale shark is now listed as endangered on the IUCN's Red List, with only half of the original population remaining.
The discovery of this long-distance migration was made possible by the unique spotting patterns on each whale shark, akin to human fingerprints. Researchers from the Madagascar Whale Shark Project and the Marine Conservation Society Seychelles were able to identify and track a juvenile male shark, first spotted off Nosy Be, Madagascar, in 2019, and later resighted off Mahé in the Seychelles in August 2025. This is the first verified sighting of a whale shark moving from one country to another in the region, providing crucial evidence of a shared, transboundary population.
Stella Diamant, from the Madagascar Whale Shark Project, expressed her awe at the discovery, stating, 'We've been recording whale sharks since 2015, and to see an individual traveling between Madagascar and Seychelles is astounding. This first-of-its-kind event is what we were waiting for.'
The finding comes at a time when whale shark sightings are declining in Madagascar and increasing in the Seychelles, suggesting a potential shift in their feeding grounds. This has prompted the two conservation organizations to collaborate on monitoring efforts, aiming to enhance our understanding of the species' spatial ecology and migratory behavior.
